It’s that time of year again. The time of year when you sit down and think; Is my education really worth it? Can I stand three, two, or even one more year of this useless, unwanted torture? The answers are almost always:

“Yes, I have to.”

“It’s only one more year.”

“My parents will kill me if I don’t.”

“I have to get into a good college.”

People always say high school is either the best or worst years of your life. I can only hope this isn’t the peak of my existence. It can be so very hard to simply exist in this environment. With all the change in atmosphere and social conduct it’s challenging to figure yourself out and find a place to fit in. If these past four years are as good as it gets, what’s the point of going on?

Beginning the journey coming into freshman is the easiest part – your classes are pretty much given to you and a straight path is set out. The ultimate factor deciding your fate is whether or not you choose to sell your soul to choir or opt for something more soothing such as ceramics or art. As the years continue more obstacles follow and students soon have to choose for themselves. The kids that take AP classes are banded together within the first year and continue on in a close knit tribe for four years of crying, AP tests, persuasive essays, and sleeplessness. For all the other kids the lack of recognition is their sanctuary. Able to slide under the radar without pressure and deadlines is the only happiness found in the chaos.

Some people have to try so hard to succeed while others breeze through without lifting a finger. There is a stigma depicting students that take higher level classes as being able to do no wrong. This single attribute of knowledge for a certain subject makes them seem invincible. This both unfairly categorizes all other students as being less than and creates unnecessary pressure on those students to continue to meet every high standard set for them.

Besides academics, kids have to choose who to hang out with and become friends with. As much as we all want everybody to get along and be friends it doesn’t work that way. People undeniably seclude themselves and section themselves off from certain people even if it’s unintentional. Sometimes in order to grow you have to leave people behind. It can be very difficult, or in some cases suspiciously easy. Whether you make friends or forget them it all contributes to who high school makes you.

When you realize it’s really over you wonder why you just wasted four years of young adult life sitting in stuffy rooms, smelling warm ketchup, and being questioned every time you have to pee.

The collection of experiences imprint in your mind – not all of them good. Students realize that some teachers, are just bad teachers, some projects really are a waste of time, and some people really just don’t care if they fail all their classes.  I’m not saying everything is all bad either. Some people leave an everlasting impact that sticks with you.

The final thought of the year, for me at least, being a senior, is that school, in general, hasn’t been a complete waste of time. Mainly because I’ve made cool friends and some fun trips with choir. But that’s pretty much it.

All I can say for everybody that is stuck here for the next couple years is good luck. Just get your work done and try to stay on the good side of things and high school will be over before you know it.
