On May 16th Napa High’s concert and chamber choirs were invited to the Golden State Choir Competition. This is an invitational competition for the top ten choirs in Northern California. The competition was held at Pacific Union College. Other choirs that performed besides our own were, Monte Vista, Shasta High, Liberty High (not the one in Napa), Mount Eden, James Logan, SRVHS, Dougherty Valley, Moreau, Montgomery, and Castro Valley.

Oscar Casas, a senior at Napa High, is in the chamber choir. He was disappointed that chamber placed 4th but, “[They] did [their] best and there’s nothing [he] would have changed.”  Casas believes they there is always room for improvement but he still feels like, “…it was one of our best performances without a doubt.” Even after many performances in his high school career, Casas still felt nervous “right before they hit [their] first note.” After the performance though he, “…walked off the risers smiling and feeling very confident.” When asked if he feels the choir could have performed better he replied, “There is always some time that has been wasted in week and we could have minimized that even more to prepare ourselves more.”

Hannah Remboldt is a junior at Napa High and in the concert choir. Remboldt feels personally that she could have, “… added more emotion to the music,” in her performance. She also feels like she could have done better due to the fact that when she sings she sometimes zones out. Remboldt also mention that she feels the choir as a whole could have done better because “…some people don’t try very hard.” Remboldt did not feel nervous about her performance, “I was just excited I do not really know. It was a fun experience I was more nervous afterwards because it would suck if we did not place at all.”

The concert choir finished in 3rd place and chamber choir finished in 4th. Concert choir, had mandatory rehearsals on weekends and on school nights aside from 5 hours per week in school. Chamber had rehearsals on Monday’s from 6:30-8:45 aside from 5 hours per week during school.
