This year’s football season could not have been better for previous varsity head coach Troy Mott. The Indian’s Varsity football team ended their season with a 7-4 overall record, and a impressive undefeated 5-0 record in league play, and a massive 35-0 blowout in Big Game XLV.

There was a hitch in the glorious year for Mott however, and that hitch came in form of a call to the Napa Police on November 19th.

With Big Game XLV just four days away, excitement and tension was nearing an all season high. On the night of Halloween, after a hard practice, an alleged hazing incident happened. The incident unfolded in the Napa High locker room. It was some sort of hazing ritual, where players were alleged to have sexually and physically assaulted freshman players. According to reports, no severe injuries were sustained from the incident.

Hours before this information was released to the public, Brian King, Napa High’s athletic director stepped down from role as athletic director. Mr. King has stated there was no motive for his resignation.

As the investigation proceeded, many football players were called in during the school day to be interviewed by the Police. As more and more information was released by Napa Police Department, news agencies became interested in the reported hazing incident.

As of now, there has been no final verdict reached on the incident, but 10 football players have been suspended due to their involvement.

With hearings and suspensions of players still looming for the Napa High football program, it was looking like it couldn’t get any worse. That was until March 15th, when news broke that varsity head coach Troy Mott had resigned from his coaching position. “The decision was extremely hard, extremely difficult. It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make” stated Mott.

“I was told there were certain coaches that wouldn’t be brought back,” said Mott in an interview, “and I didn’t feel like that was appropriate. All coaches were investigated throughout this process, to make sure that the coaching staff didn’t know about it or that we weren’t promoting this. We understood that and supported that. All coaches were found to be cleared by the district.”

On Friday, March 17th, players from the football program organized a walkout from school to meet in front of the district building in order to protest the “failings” that the district had done to the program.

“We’re out here because the school district, Patrick Sweeney and Mrs. Petrie have made very unpopular decisions, not just with the football program, Coach Mott, and the hazing they are accusing teammates of. They’re acting for what they want, not the kids they’re supposed to protect” said an angry player at the walkout who chose to keep his identity private.

Even though both Brian King and Troy Mott have resigned from their positions within Napa High School athletics, they’re still academic teachers at Napa High.

“I really enjoyed my time here as the head coach. I grew up in this town, and I grew up in this school as a student. I’ve taken extreme pride in being a head coach and being a teacher here at Napa High and continue to take pride in this school and community,” closed Mott.
