Marco Rosales is a 9th grader at Napa High, but when he’s on the track, it’s at the varsity level. He formerly attended Harvest Middle School where he broke a record for the fastest mile ever ran by a boy. His current fastest mile time is 4 minutes and 49 seconds.

In 7th to 8th grade Rosales was on the track and field team, “I got into track because I wanted to run with my friends and also to improve in my form and running.”

He used to do only two events, the 1,600 meter run and the 400 meter dash. Now that he’s on the Napa High track and field team, he competes in three events: the 3,200 meter run, cross country run, and the 1,600 meter run.

Recently Napa High competed against Armijo High where Rosales won all 3 of his events, helping Napa beat Armijo. And this Wednesday Napa competed against Vintage and tied, Rosales won the 3,200 meter run and placed 3rd in the 1,600 meter run.

“The meet was awesome.”

Rosales also plays club soccer, which he started playing when he was 9 years old. He’s currently plays for The Strikers, but before he was on Napa United. Both teams consist of boys from Napa and Vallejo. He played for Napa United for two years before moving to The Strikers.  His position is central defender, which he’s played for both teams.

When Rosales has free time, he likes to read and hang out with his friends. He mostly reads fiction, he commented on his favorite book, which is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Rosales stated that The Alchemist is his favorite because, “It teaches you how to pursue your individual dreams.”

Rosales plans on staying on the track and field team all of high school and well into college. He wants to go to Napa Valley Junior College and then eventually transfer to Stanford University. Rosales is quite invested in his academic career. He’s currently in AVID, which has helped him with his dream education path. His life goal pretty big: “My goal is to join the track team at Stanford and try to qualify for the Olympics.”

Even if it’s a long shot he’s determined to make it.
