On May 24th, Principal Annie Petrie announced that the search for the new Napa High football head coach was over. The new coach is Jesus Martinez.

Martinez has been a coach of Napa football since 2006, coaching next to ex-head coach Troy Mott for an impressive 10 years. “We were very aware of the caliber of a coach he was” said Mrs. Petrie.

“We were left with a challenge that was unthinkable,” said Petrie, “every one left who was on the previous coaching staff. Hiring a full staff was a challenge”

There was no clear indication if the title was re-offered to Troy Mott, as Petrie said, “For confidentiality of the applicants, but all options were explored in our search.”

The school made offers to six other applicants, two internal candidates and four new candidates. All the six offers were declined by the candidates because in Mrs. Petrie’s mind, “Because of the uncertainty.”

The hire comes just in time for Napa as if a new coach was not found before June 15th, the 2017-18 football season would have been cancelled. “I’m happy for the kids and happy for the school,” said Petrie, “it’s been a long journey, and I want the kids to get back to playing and I want our school to start healing. I’m very relieved.”

The MEL schedule was released not long ago. It sparked outrage among football players of Napa High as their team was nowhere to be found.

“I want to say thank you to the kids, for sticking it out. Thank you to the community for rallying around Napa High and coming together for the kids. It’s going take time for us to heal, but I think we’re on the right path,” closed Petrie.
