The prom season is here, this means high school couples will sometimes ask each other out in extravagant ways. These proposals sometimes even go viral on social media, especially on Twitter. The hashtag, #promposal2017 has been trending on Twitter, Instagram, and even Pinterest since prom season started. Napa High’s prom is happening on the 22nd of April, many students have already completed a promposal. This being said, are promposals a necessity or are they too much?

Prom already has many expensive traditions, is adding a promposal worth it? Some can also be costly but most aren’t, it all depends on the promposal. Some are quite simple, like spelling out “Prom?” with food or a punny question on a poster. While others go above and beyond, an example would be riding in on a dancing horse with live music playing in the background while friends hold up posters that say “Will u ride with me to prom?”, twitter user @_joesfina proudly shared this exact promposal this March.

One of the promposal trends is referencing a favorite show or movie, Disney movies are a favorite. Some examples of Disney themed promposals are Lilo and Stitch, Up, Frozen, and the newest Disney film Beauty and the Beast. These promposals have become very popular since the release of the film, Beauty and the Beast promposals usually quote iconic lines and some even feature the enchanted Rose. Many of the shows that are referenced in promposals are on Netflix, like The Office, American Horror Story, and Grey’s Anatomy. Recently the Netflix original 13 Reasons Why has become very popular, and has sparked multiple 13 Reasons Why promposals.

Another trend is sports themed promposals, these usually feature wordplay and/or include equipment from the sport. One example is the volleyball promposal, which usually features a volleyball, with a word play question written on it. An example would be “I’d dig it if you went to prom with me,” the pun is in the word dig, to dig in volleyball is to prevent the ball from hitting the floor after being spiked by the opposing team. Another sport example is basketball, one popular play on words would be “Want to take a shot at prom?” the word shot in basketball means a player has tried to shoot the ball in the hoop.

Promposals are becoming quite the trend nowadays, maybe some day it’ll be a part of the whole prom thing. Done right, promposals are a creative and fun way to ask someone to prom. Just be wary of doing too much.
